The Drama Script

Listen to the play being read

THE GOOD QUEEN IS SEWING AT A WINDOW. FALLING SNOW CAN BE CONVEYED BY FALLING WHITE CONFETTI, COTTON WOOL (WE CAN SEE CHILDREN THROWING IT) OR BY LIGHTING.

NARRATOR 1:               In the middle of winter when snow was falling like white                                                  feathers, the Queen sat sewing at her window.

NARRATOR 2:               She pricked her finger with her needle.

GOOD QUEEN:             Ouch! That hurt.

NARRATOR 1:                And a drop of red blood fell on the white snow.

GOOD QUEEN:              I want to have a child as white as snow, as red as blood                                                    and as black as the wood of the window frame.
A SERVANT CAN BRING HER A BABY GIRL DOLL TO CUDDLE
THE GOOD QUEEN MAY SING HER A LULLABY

NARRATOR 2:               Soon she had a little daughter, who was as white as snow,                                               and had lips as red as blood, and her hair was as black as                                               coal.

NARRATOR 1:                So she called her Snow White.

THE SERVANT TAKES THE DOLL FROM HER AND TAKES THE CHAIR AWAY AND THE QUEEN LIES DOWN.

NARRATOR 2:               But when Snow White was born, the Queen died.

THE QUEEN GETS UP AND LEAVES AND ANOTHER QUEEN APPEARS ON STAGE.

NARRATOR 1:                After a year the King married again.

NARRATOR 2:               She was a beautiful woman.

NARRATOR 1:                But very vain and very unkind.

AN ACTOR DRESSED AS A LOOKING GLASS WALKS ONTO THE STAGE

NARRATOR 2:               She had a wonderful looking glass that could speak.

BAD QUEEN:                 Magic mirror on the wall, who is the most beautiful of all?

LOOKING GLASS:        You, oh Queen, are the most beautiful of all.

SNOW WHITE WALKS ONTO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE STAGE. SHE SWEEPS THE FLOOR WITH A BROOM

NARRATOR 1:                The new Queen was unkind to Snow White. She made her                                             sweep all the palace.

NARRATOR 2:                But Snow-white was growing up, and grew more and more                                              beautiful;

NARRATOR 1:                And when she was seven, the new queen again asked the                                               looking glass.

BAD QUEEN:                  Magic mirror on the wall who is the most beautiful of all?LOOKING GLASS:         You are beautiful oh Queen, but more beautiful still is                                                        Snow White.

BAD QUEEN:                  (SCREECHES) What! (SHE TURNS TO SNOW WHITE)

Get out of here, you horrid girl.

SNOW WHITE DROPS HER BROOM SHE RUNS AWAY

NARRATOR 2:                The Queen grew to hate Snow White more and more.

THE HUNTSMAN ENTERS

NARRATOR 1:                 One day she summoned her Huntsman.

BAD QUEEN:                 Take the child away into the forest; I will no longer have her                                              in my sight. Kill her, and bring me back her heart.

THE QUEEN LEAVES THE STAGE. THE HUNTSMAN PRODUCES A SMALL BOX. HE THEN FETCHES SNOW WHITE. STAGE HANDS CARRY ON SOME CUT OUTS OF TREES OR SOME BRANCHES AND LEAVES TO CONVEY THE FOREST.

NARRATOR 2:                 The huntsman obeyed, and took her away;

HE DRAWS HIS KNIFE

NARRATOR 1:                 But when he had drawn his knife, and was about to pierce                                              Snow-white’s innocent heart, she began to weep.

SNOW WHITE:                (CRYING) Dear huntsman, leave me my life! I will run away                                             into the wild forest, and never come home again.

HE PUTS AWAY HIS KNIFE. HE KNEELS BEFORE HER.

HUNTSMAN:                    Please forgive me.

SNOW WHITE:                 Of course I forgive you.

HE GETS UP.

HUNTSMAN:                    Run away, then, you poor child.

SNOW WHITE:                 Thank you, dear Huntsman.

SHE RUNS AWAY

HUNTSMAN:                   (TO HIMSELF) The wild beasts will soon eat her.

AN ACTOR DRESSED AS A WILD BOAR APPEARS. THE HUNTSMAN PRETENDS TO STAB IT WITH HIS KNIFE, TAKES OUT ITS HEART AND PUTS IT IN HIS BOX.
HUNTSMAN:                   The Queen will think this is Snow-White’s heart.

THE COOK APPEARS AND THE HUNTSMAN TAKES THE HEART OUT OF THE BOX AND GIVES IT TO HER.

HUNTSMAN:                   Take this and give it to the Queen.

AS THIS HAPPENS STAGE HANDS BRING ON A TABLE AND CHAIR WITH A KNIFE AND FORK AND THE BAD QUEEN SITS AT IT.

NARRATOR 1:                 The cook cooked and salted the heart.

SHE TAKES IT ON A PLATE TO THE QUEEN. (IT COULD BE A REAL, SMALL HAMBURGER IN THE SHAPE OF A HEART). THE QUEEN EATS IT.

BAD QUEEN:                   Delicious!

NARRATOR 2:                 The bad Queen ate it all, thinking she was eating Snow                                                     white’s heart.
THE QUEEN LEAVES. SNOW WHITE APPEARS AGAIN AND WANDERS IN THE FOREST. THE STAGE HANDS BRING ON A CUT-OUT OF A MODEL HOUSE.

SNOW WHITE:                 It looks like a doll’s house. I wonder if I can sleep there.                                                    Let’s have a look inside.

THE STAGE HANDS REMOVE THE MODEL.
IF POSSIBLE HAVE A DOOR HERE THROUGH WHICH SNOW WHITE AND LATER THE SEVEN DWARFS WILL ENTER. THE STAGE HANDS CAN BRING THIS ON.

THEY ALSO CARRY THE TABLE AND CHAIR ACROSS THE STAGE AND BRING ON 7 PLATES WITH SOME FOOD AND 7 MUGS WITH SOME DRINK.

SNOW WHITE:                 I am so hungry. I hope they won’t mind.

SHE EATS

SNOW WHITE:                And thirsty.

SHE DRINKS. THE STAGE HANDS ALSO BRING ON ONE BED MADE TO LOOK LIKE SEVEN LITTLE BEDS.

SNOW WHITE:                And tired.

BEDS AND GOES STRAIGHT TO SLEEP. THEN OFF STAGE WE HEAR THE
MARCHING SONG OF THE DWARFS APPROACHING.
SEVEN                            Heigh ho, heigh ho
DWARFS:                        It’s off from work we go
                                         Heigh ho, heigh ho
It’s off from work we go

THE 7 DWARFS ENTER. THEY DON’T YET SEE SNOW-WHITE. ALL EXCEPT FOR DOPEY HAVE BEARDS.

NARRATOR 1:                When it was quite dark the owners of the cottage came                                                    back.

DOC:                                (TO THE AUDIENCE) Hello

NARRATOR 1:                Bashful.
BASHFUL TRIES TO HIDE HIMSELF, BUT THE HE TURNS TO THE AUDIENCE

BASHFUL                       I’m shy.

NARRATOR 2:                Sneezy.

SNEEZY;                        (SNEEZES) Who’s been cutting with my knife?

DOPEY:                           Who’s been drinking out of my mug.

THEY THEN SEE SNOW WHITE SLEEPING ON THEIR BEDS.
THEY DON’T WAKE HER UP.
DOC:                               Oh heavens!

HAPPY:                          Oh heavens!

GRUMPY:                        But where shall we sleep?

DOPEY:                           Anywhere.

THEY BLOW OUT THEIR CANDLES, LIE DOWN AROUND THE ROOM AND BEGIN TO WHISTLE AND SNORE IN THEIR SLEEP.

WHILE THEY ALL SLEEP THE QUEEN AND THE LOOKING GLASS COME ONTO ONE SIDE OF THE STAGE.
BAD QUEEN:                 Magic mirror on the wall who is the most beautiful of all?

LOOKING                       Queen, you are fairest of all I see,
GLASS:                           But in the forest, where the seven dwarfs dwell,
Snow-white is still alive and well,
And none is so fair as she.

NARRATOR 1:               Then she was astonished.

NARRATOR 2:               She knew that the looking-glass never spoke falsely

NARRATOR 1:               She knew that the huntsman had betrayed her,

NARRATOR 2:               And that little Snow-white was still alive.

NARRATOR 1:               And so she thought and thought again how she might kill                                                her.

The Complete Play, Homework and Other Advice

The teacher gives the students rewards, perhaps an English through Drama certificate.

For their homework the students will write and perform how they might end the play.

They can share their ideas of how the Bad Queen might try to kill Snow White.

What do the dwarfs do about this?

What happens to Snow White in the end?

Does she go to sleep for a thousand years?

Or does she get married?

Also for their homework the students may draw or paint a picture of Snow White or the Bad Queen or the Seven Dwarfs.

Once the students have written and performed their own endings, you can access the completed play at Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.  You can organise a school or drama club production for families and friends to enjoy.

You can submit your students’ pictures to the English through Drama website. The best pictures will go on the website. If they wish we shall add their name, school and / or country.

We have advice on the use of music in plays and particularly the music of the great classical composers and of film music.  Have a listen !
