href=\"https:\/\/learnetd.com\/teachers\/teacher-courses\/tertiary-drama\/spiritual\/athanasius\/\">Athanasius<\/a>\u00a0of the West&#8221;.<sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTEChisholm1911458_3-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hilary_of_Poitiers#cite_note-FOOTNOTEChisholm1911458-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0His name comes from the Latin word for happy or cheerful. In addition to his important work as bishop, Hilary was married and the father of\u00a0<a title=\"Abra of Poitiers\" href=\"https:\/\/www.johnsanidopoulos.com\/2018\/12\/saint-abra-daughter-of-hilary-of.html\">Abra of Poitiers<\/a>, a nun and saint who became known for her charity.<br><br>\n\n\nHis parents were pagans of distinction. He received a good pagan education, which included a high level of Greek. Baptized in about 345, he was elected Bishop of Poitiers around 353-354. In the years that followed, Hilary wrote his first work, <em>Commentary on Saint Matthew\u2019s Gospel<\/em>. It is the oldest extant commentary in Latin on this Gospel.<\/p><p>In 356, he took part as a Bishop in the Synod of B\u00e9ziers in the South of France, the \u201csynod of false apostles\u201d, as he himself called it, since the assembly was in the control of philo-Arian Bishops who denied the divinity of Jesus Christ. \u201cThese false apostles\u201d asked the Emperor Constantius to have the Bishop of Poitiers sentenced to exile. Thus, in the summer of 356, Hilary was forced to leave Gaul.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-9ce1640 animated-fast elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default elementor-invisible\" data-id=\"9ce1640\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\" data-settings=\"{&quot;animation&quot;:&quot;fadeInUp&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-ddccc4c\" data-id=\"ddccc4c\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2f8eafb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2f8eafb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBanished to Phrygia in present-day Turkey, Hilary found himself in contact with a religious context totally dominated by Arianism. <br><br>Here too, his concern as a Pastor impelled him to work strenuously to re-establish the unity of the Church on the basis of right faith as formulated by the Council of Nicaea. He impeached Auxentius, bishop of Milan, a man high in the imperial favour, as heterodox. Emperor Valentinian I accordingly summoned Hilary to Milan to there maintain his charges. However, the supposed heretic gave satisfactory answers to all the questions proposed. Hilary denounced Auxentius as a hypocrite as he himself was ignominiously expelled from Milan.
