When the author was four years old, he was sitting on a coloured carpet, playing with building blocks. Through an open window he could see a cloudless blue sky. His mother was sitting in a chair watching him at play. Suddenly the child looked up and gazing through the window at the blue heavens, spontaneously asked his mother: \u201cWhere is God? Is he in heaven? Does he float there? Or is he sitting there? Where?<\/p>

His mother sat up straight and gave the following answer, which has held true for the child ever after: \u201cGod is present everywhere. We know that even though we cannot see the air, it penetrates everything – and it is only thanks to the air that we can live and breathe. In this same way we live and breathe in God. And since it is in God that we live and breathe, it is from God and thanks to God that we live.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

This answer, so clear and convincing, was like a breath of fresh air that ever blew away any conundrums on this question, leaving behind always the certainty of God’s invisible presence everywhere. And it has been said that this seed-thought was to flourish into the heights and depths and breaths, proving to be the primal seed from which a many branched tree of insight and faith unfolded over the following decades of the author’s life.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe \u201cnight\u201d, of which St John of the Cross speaks is where one withdraws oneself \u201cin secret\u201d and in which one has to immerse oneself each time that one meditates on the Arcana of the Tarot.

\nIt is a work to be accomplished in solitude.The Arcana are not secrets. An arcanum is that which is necessary to \u201cknow\u201d in order to be fruitful in a given domain of spiritual life.\n

\nJust as the arcanum is superior to the secret so is the mystery superior to the arcanum.\n\nThe mystery is a spiritual event comparable to birth or death.<\/span>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe Major Arcana of the Tarot are a complete, invaluable school of meditation, study and spiritual effort \u2013 a masterly school in the art of learning.<\/span>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThese letters serve and sustain the Hermetic tradition \u2013 from its first appearance in the epoch of Hermes Tremegistus, lost in the remoteness of antiquity.<\/span>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tNote: Both Thoth and Hermes were gods of writing and of magic in their respective cultures. Thus, the Greek god of interpretive communication was combined with the Egyptian god of wisdom as a patron of astrology and alchemy. In addition, both gods were psychopomps; guiding souls to the afterlife.<\/span>\n\n \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe Hermetics live for the mystery of the communal heart which beats within all religions, all philosophies, all arts and all sciences \u2013 past, present and future; and inspired by the example of John, the beloved disciple, they do not pretend to play a directing role in religion, science, art, in social or political life.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCardinal Hans Urs von Balthasar writes in his Afterword to The Meditations on the Tarot: Origen undertook as a Christian to elucidate not only the pagan philosophical wisdom in the light of Biblical revelation, but also \u201cthe wisdom of the rulers of this world\u201d, (I Cor ii.6), by which he meant the so-called secret wisdom of the Egyptians, especially the Hermetic writing written by \u201cHermes Trismegistus\u201d, the Egyptian god, Thoth.<\/span>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Interesting accounts have been given by various people of their meetings – on a spiritual level – with the author of these works. One such account can be found in the preface to Healing into Immortality, by the New York psychiatrist Gerald Epstein, who describes there an experience in 1974 while he was with his teacher in Jerusalem drinking tea in her garden. A thin bespectacled gentleman walking by stopped for a moment and said in a booming voice:
\u201cIt reminds me of the days of the prophecies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

His next encounter with this stranger was in January 1986 in the Paraclete Bookshop in New York. He was interested in mental imagery and had selected several volumes. He was about to pay for them when this same stranger, without saying a word, picked up each book in turn and laid it down again, as if to say \u201cThis is not it; this is not it.\u201d Then the stranger pointed to a copy of Meditations on the Tarot. Dr. Epstein decided to buy this book and forego the others. He went to the door of the bookshop to thank the stranger, who had just left. When he got outside the stranger was gone.<\/p>

When he began reading it, his life was changed. A stream of inspiration began to flow and his questions began to be answered inwardly.
