Tips

The teacher will need a lot of energy and variety of approach, as small children get very easily bored.

Meditation

Before you start you have the option to introduce your children to meditation

Description

It is a good idea to have a regular routine for meditation and to repeat the form of meditation you have already introduced, so that it becomes a habit.

A little girl from Thailand says, “I like to meditate. I sit and meditate every day. It makes me feel good and I think it makes me do better at school too.”

Beginning Meditation

Tell your children to imagine they have a bubble around them, so they are in their own special space. Take a moment to let them get settled.. Give them a little moment to fidget or wriggle a little bit, so that they feel happy to stay still and relaxed.

Now repeat the meditation exercise from courses 1 and 2. Today they can meditate for one extra minute bringing the total to 4 minutes. Then your children will be ready to concentrate.

Daily Routines

Multiple Activities

Taking an Action

The teacher shows a picture of a child waking up. Say “wake up”. Students repeat. Teacher shows flashcards and mimes the words brushing teeth, combing hair, eating, picking up bags and going to school with appropriate movements, gestures and facial expressions. Prompt the students to repeat the activity. Now you will be ready for the warm up song. If doing all the actions and showing the flashcards is too much to combine alone get a buddy or older child to help.

Games

Multiple Games

Let the Children Play with Blocks

When children are playing with blocks, they are learning about colour, shape, and patterns, as well as the concepts of weight, size, height, length, vertical and horizontal. Help them to:

  • Use language for counting and sorting: How many are there? Shall we put the blue ones here?
  • Use positional language: in, on, under, below, behind, next to.
  • Explore language related to size: big, small, long, and short.
  • Describe what a child is doing while playing: finding, stacking, pulling, pushing, building, pressing, dragging
  • Describe shapes and objects the children are making: square, rectangle, tower, house, castle, garden.

Animal Game

A simple drama game to learn animal vocabulary and get everyone moving around and having fun.

  1. Print out 4-5 picture cards/flashcards of different farm/jungle animals.
  2. Have the children spread out around the room.
  3. Show each child (in secret) an animal card.
  4. Tell the children to “pretend” to become the animal. Encourage them to mime their animal’s gestures and sounds and start to prowl, bark, stomp, slither, quack, hop, whoosh, or waddle around the room in search of other “family” members (someone who acts and sounds like them).
  5. When they find the same animal, they team up and continue role-playing until everyone has found a group.
  6. The teacher then goes around and asks: “What animal are you?”
  7. Each Family answers in unison “I’m a Lion,”(Roar!) or “I’m a snake,” (Sssssss!) or “I’m a duck” (Quack quack!) etc…

This game was invented by Miranda Flynn Legge of www.kidsenglishtheatre.com. She runs wonderful workshops for teachers in beautiful Florence.

Drama Game

Chain Drill

Instructions

This is similar to the chain drill in kindergarten 2.

  • The teacher asks what do you do when you wake up?
  • The teacher mimes and does the action.
  • Prompt students to copy actions, body language, and facial expressions.
  • Prompt the students to ask each other and to give answers. (refer to the Wake up song above)

Rewards

Certificate for you to design?

Rewards and Homework

The teacher gives each of the student a sticker or an English through Drama certificate or something of your choice for doing so well in the competitions. Remind them to fill in their letter C colouring sheet by the next lesson or draw or paint any pictures with words beginning with the letter C.
